A Quaker-Style Marriage Certificate: A Beautiful Way to Remember Your Wedding Day

Weddings go by in a blur. You spend months or years planning, and then suddenly the day arrives, full of emotion and celebration, and before you know it, you’re married and wondering how it all went by so fast. One of the sweetest ways to hold onto that moment, and the people who shared it with you, is with a Quaker-style marriage certificate.

Traditionally, in the Quaker faith, a couple makes a declaration to one another in front of their community. There’s no minister; instead, the marriage is witnessed by God and by everyone present. Afterward, the couple signs a certificate documenting their vows, and then every guest signs it too.

Even if you’re not of the Quaker faith, this idea translates beautifully into any wedding. It turns a simple document into a keepsake filled with meaning, memory, and the presence of the people you love.

Why You’ll Love Having One

It captures your community in a personal way

Imagine having a piece of art on your wall that holds the signatures of every person who celebrated with you on your wedding day. The certificate is not just names on a guest list — it holds each person’s actual handwriting and captures that moment in time with them.

It becomes more meaningful as the years go by

You’ll be able to look back on the certificate after years have passed and see the careful, wobbly handwriting of a child who’s now grown up into a young adult. Or the signature of a grandparent who has passed on. Or the name of a friend who moved across the country. Each and every signature is a reminder of a special person who you chose to celebrate with for your wedding day, a living memory of your friends and family, frozen in ink.

It’s a piece of art you’ll actually want to display

Unlike a standard marriage license that gets tucked away in a drawer, a Quaker-style certificate is designed to be seen. With custom calligraphy, illustrations, and colors that match your wedding aesthetic, it becomes a meaningful piece of artwork for your home, and a reminder of all the loved ones in your life.

It’s completely customizable to your story

Florals that match your bouquet, colors from your wedding palette, a border inspired by your venue, or illustrations that represent your relationship — everything can be tailored to you. Your vows or declaration can be written exactly the way you want them, too. Nothing is cookie cutter since the certificate is being created by hand, and no other certificate will be like it.

A Thoughtful Alternative to a Guest Book

A lot of couples buy a guest book with the best intentions… and then discover after the wedding that only a handful of pages were signed. Guests forget, the book gets tucked in a corner, or people assume someone else in their family already wrote in it on behalf of everyone.

A Quaker-style marriage certificate solves those problems beautifully.

Because it’s displayed prominently, and because it’s part of the ceremony or reception, guests naturally want to sign it. It feels meaningful, not optional. Everyone understands that their signature belongs there, as their presence helps bring the day to life.

Instead of a half-empty book that gets stored away, you end up with a single, stunning piece filled with the names of the people who showed up for you. It’s a guest book you’ll actually see every day, not once every few years when you’re cleaning out a closet.

Real Examples: C+F, and J+G

C+F wanted something personal and romantic, so we created a certificate with soft pink and blush peonies in a line-drawn style that matched their invitations. Their declaration was written in their preferred calligraphy style, and each flower was painted individually in watercolor so the whole piece felt organic and one-of-a-kind.

For J+G, we decided on the bold colors of fuschia plants for a top banner, and added a hummingbird on each side of the text to represent the couple. A grass and flower motif below the signatures grounded the certificate.

Both couples displayed their certificates at their wedding for guests to sign, and now have them framed and hanging in their home as a daily reminder of their vows and the people who witnessed them.

If You Want Something That Lasts Long After the Wedding Day…

A Quaker-style marriage certificate is one of those rare wedding details that becomes more meaningful over time. It’s a piece of art, a record of your vows, and a collection of the people who celebrated with you — all in one place.

Custom certificates start at $350, with the final investment depending on the amount of text and the level of illustration you’d like. Whether you want something simple and elegant, or richly detailed and colorful, we’ll work together to create something that feels like you.

If this sounds like the kind of keepsake you’d treasure, I’d love to help you bring it to life.
